Owning a Doberman
Most people are
surprised to learn what Hollywood hasn't taught us: that the well trained, properly cared for Doberman is one of the most loyal, gentle and affectionate dogs available; a
wonderful companion for your family and children! Many people associate the
proud and beautiful Doberman Pinscher with guard dogs. Truly, this elegant
and loyal animal can be an effective protector for you, but his sweet nature,
like that of most dogs, craves loving care as the number one priority in
a good home.
The most important considerations any time you are thinking about adopting a pet are:
- Are you committed to loving this pet the way he deserves by giving him regular affection?
- Do you have the financial ability and time to give this pet sufficient food, water, shelter and veterinary care?
- Can you provide this pet with the exercise he needs to stay healthy and well-adjusted?
- Are you willing to take your new friend to obedience classes and devote the time necessary to provide the training that all dogs, particularly large dogs, need to fit happily into your home?
If you provide
these basic things, the Doberman will reward you with undying love and devotion,
and
amaze you every day with his playful antics and perceptive nature. When he
cocks his head and fixes you with his soulful, intelligent eyes, you will
know you've been repaid for all of your care and efforts.
Pending placement,
our dogs are kept in foster homes or are boarded at a kennel north of Columbus,
Ohio. Each dogs needs and temperament are carefully evaluated before placement.
This is the first step in ensuring that the dog and its new owner are a good
match.
Each prospective adoptive parent is screened. An application form must
be completed and a visit is made to the home by a rescue volunteer. A determination
is made that the desire to adopt a Doberman is not just a passing whim; that
the members of the household are aware of the nature of the Doberman and
the commitment required for dog ownership. In rental situations, the landlord
is contacted to ensure that large dogs are permitted, as landlord disputes
are such a common reason for giving up pets.
